You know, I fled Bosnia to leave this behind. (though I doubt he is actually advocation genocide)

Infidel & Kafir Watch

Islam cannot be held responsible for other religions and societies shrinking in Europe. If these societies and religions are failing then maybe they need to review their own morals and ways of life instead of blaming Islam for everything.

Few days ago in the UK it was reported that in 2006 marriages in UK had reduced ever since records where kept. Is this Islam's fault or the fault of the society in which they live.

It seems like if anything is going wrong just blame Islam. Maybe it time for people to investigate why Islam is growing at such a fast rate in the UK.

hajarun

Even if Muslims weren't here there would still be a decline in religion and society in the UK.

Just ask any British person from the previous generation and they will nearly all complain about how standards have dropped in education, in healthcare, in social justice in the very moral fabric of this society.

All of this has little or nothing at all to do with the presence of Islam in their countries.

Ted

This is a regular Steyn theme - European 'deathbed demographics' meaning we'll be 'outbred' by Muslims. It would take too long to explain everything that's wrong with his repeated assertion. This, though, is the first time I've read him advocating ethnic cleansing. A cheerleader for big business who, thankfully, no longer has a British outlet for his opinions.

Other Steyn predictions -

"A year from now Basra will have a lower crime rate than most London boroughs" - April 12 2003

"By the year's end . . . Iraq will be the least ill-governed state in the Middle East" - April 4 2004; and, most characteristic of all in its blend of ignorance and arrogance: "Another six weeks of insurgency sounds about right, after which it will peter out" - December 27 2003.

"if you can't outbreed the enemy, cull 'em", my instant verbal response to this, cannot be repeated here as it involved "taking the Lord's name in vain".

My second response is why do people give this kind of opinion the time of day. But I suppose there is a need to; just because I think it is outrageous, doesn't mean that he doesn't actually believe it.

And then I recalled that the population of Ireland before the Famine of 1847-49, was 6 million. A bit of a demographic threat just off the shores of the Empire. And the result of letting the Famine do the work. A million dead, and several million forced to emigrate. Land clearance for the English landowners and less of a threat.

hajarun: standards have dropped, because money has become God. That kills any sense of community, and Maggie et al knew this.

The Fanonite

Steyn is a Ziocon windbag who is merely reproducing the current Zionist talking points in less hypocritical manner. Only recently the New York Times' editorial was showing a similar concern for the Muslim "demographic threat". Murdoch's Jerusalem Post has been waging its crusade on Europe's muslims for quite some time now.

The attempt here is to project Israel's own demographic concerns on to Europeans through appeals to the worst xenophobic and racist elements of the european society.

I have commented on some of these issues here.

As for how this xenophobia is stoked and amplified, you may want to read this

Ted

"And then I recalled that the population of Ireland before the Famine of 1847-49, was 6 million."

Oh aye. The famine was a genocide? Only to nationalist lunatics that have been drinking out of the sewers down the Falls.

aineliva

Ted, are you trying to "Maul" my words.

I did not use the word genocide, you did. And not all nationalists are "lunatics". And what would the difference between the Falls sewer water and any other part of Belfast?

George Carty

I think the real reason why British and European birth rates are so low is because of the high cost of raising children (both in terms of high house prices and the cost of higher education). I don't see why Muslims should be uniquely immune to these economic impediments...

PS. Genocide advocates should be shot.

norcross Jim

You are only partly right. Read Ben J Wattenberg's "Fewer" (2004, Ivan R Dee, Chicago, Publisher)about population decline worldwide. The education of women, migration from farm to city, more working women, abortion, contraception, STD's, lower sperm counts and lower fertility rates, cohabitation, sex ratios (choose the sex of your abortion) are all issues world wide. Women have the babies, and more education and more choices for them have produced fewer babies. Japan is now experiencing more deaths than births.

Infidel & Kafir Watch

I agree with norcross jim, and I'd like to add that whether Islam was common or not in Europe or UK this problem would still exist. So how can Islam be responsible for the changes that occur in this society which is just a decline and change of an empire.

Sophoclese

Mark Steyne has a problem. All the research shows that as women in particular and men in general become better educated, family size falls. This is happening all over the world, predominently muslim countries included.

My maternal and paternal grndparents had 23 children between. White working class. These married and had an average of three.

If Steyne is worried about demographics he should worry about China and India.
