The CIA's "alternative set of procedures"

The secret CIA flights are officially not a secret anymore. George Bush has for the first time admitted the existence of the policy whereby terror suspects are picked up and taken somewhere else in the world for "interrogation".

He maintains though that no one has been tortured. Why the need to fly them around the world then?

Bush said at the press conference: "We knew that (Abu) Zubaydah had more information that could save innocent lives, but he stopped talking. As his questioning proceeded, it became clear that he had received training on how to resist interrogation. And so the CIA used an alternative set of procedures."

But he said: "The US does not torture. I have not authorised it and I will not."

What made them suddenly start talking then? Maher Arar, who was on one of these flights, says otherwise too. Obviously the President didn't make mention of him at the press conference.

Bush says the men he did mention are now being sent to Guantanamo Bay, but get this... they'll be afforded their rights under the Geneva Convention.

These men aren't any old terrorists. Bush claims:

"Intelligence officials believe [they] orchestrated the deaths of nearly 3,000 Americans on September 11 2001"

In addition, Bush says the men responsible for the USS Cole attack and the US embassy bombings are among those who have been on the CIA flights. Such grave crimes, yet such a strange way to bring them to justice.

And the reason Bush has come out now with this? The Supreme Court has closed down the use of these flights:

"In its ruling on military commissions, the Court determined that a provision of the Geneva Conventions known as "Common Article Three" applies to our war with al Qaeda. This article includes provisions that prohibit "outrages upon personal dignity" and "humiliating and degrading treatment." "
