Voters in Glasgow turn up the heat on Labour
SNP candidate for Glasgow Central, Osama Saeed, has backed demands by leading charities for the UK Government to increase cold weather fuel payments to pensioners and vulnerable households.
Age Concern and Help the Aged have warned the existing UK government support will not be enough to prevent a soaring death rate among older people.
Saeed commented:
"On the doorsteps of Glasgow people have been telling me just what a struggle it has been heating their homes these last few weeks.
"This winter, people have faced an incredibly challenging period of intensely cold weather, the like of which we have not seen for decades. Our elderly folk in particular have faced tough choices on whether or not to spend money or heating, which may impact on some other necessity of spending.
"Added to this, household energy bills has gone up exponentially in recent years and cold weather and winter fuel payments have not gone up by anywhere near the same proportion.
"The UK government must take immediate action to help vulnerable households. I'm pleased that SNP coilleagues in Westminster have been leading this demand."
