Freeze sparked record calls to heating helpline
A record number of people in Glasgow, and across Scotland, have slashed their heating bills during the big freeze thanks to the SNP Scottish Government.
New figures show 7000 people called the SNP Scottish Government's Energy Assistance Hotline during the recent cold snap – that’s an average of 428 people a day.
As a result:
- 2,041 households will be considered for a package of free measures including energy efficient central heating systems
- 524 households will surveyed for free loft or cavity wall insulation
- 1,253 households got help to switch to cheaper fuel tariffs
- 773 households were given help to access all the benefits and tax credits they are entitled to.
Energy experts also gave instant practical advice on how to cut bills to all households that contacted the service.
Commenting SNP candidate for Glasgow Central, Osama Saeed said:
“This service is really getting the help to those that need it most. Many low income families in Glasgow, including the elderly and people on benefits have been helped to reduce fuel bills and be more energy efficient.
“When the cold weather hit this year, it hit hard, with temperatures plummeting to a 50 year low. The SNP Scottish Government’s 60 million pound Energy Assistance Package did exactly what it should during this testing time – it made sure help was freely available for those in need.
“Anyone in Glasgow who is struggling with energy costs should pick up the phone. Thanks to the Scottish Government, the chance to reduce your household fuel bill is only a phone call away.”
